ABOUT  TAE KWON-DO

What is Taekwondo?

Tae Kwon-Do is a martial art that originates from Korea.

Translated 'Tae' literally means to jump, kick or smash with the foot.

'Kwon' means a fist to punch or destroy with the hand or fist.

'Do' means art, way or method.

Tae Kwon-Do involves the application of punches, kicks, blocks, and movements with the hand, arms, legs and feet to overcome an opponent. It is proven to be one of the most powerful systems of self-defence ever devised.

Taekwondo is derived from an ancient form of unarmed combat practiced for many centuries in Korea. It became perfected in its present form by Major General Choi Hong Hi (1918-2002), and has been scientifically developed and modernised since its introduction to the world on the 11th April 1955.

In these days of violence and intimidation which seem to plague our modern societies, Tae Kwon-Do enables the weak to possess the skills and confidence to defend themselves.

Tae Kwon-Do is also a way of thinking and a way of conducting yourself in life.

Tenets of Taekwondo

We have students from 4 years to 50+ years as it’s a great for fitness, self-confidence, discipline, self-defence and meeting new people and making friends. We really are a family club with a great sociable and friendly atmosphere. We have numerous social events throughout the year where students and family members get together and have fun.

You will get out of Taekwondo what you put into it! The harder and more frequent you train the better and fitter you will become. Take it easy to begin with as you will be using muscles that you may never have used or haven’t used for a long time. It may have feel easy in class but the next few days your body will remind you it’s not as easy as it looks!...... It is worth it though!

The Instructor and Black Belts at the club are motivated to help everyone who is part of the club to get the most out of Taekwondo whatever age or ability. Our classes suit ANY fitness level from absolute beginners to those more interested in competitions. We also have several students who have supported needs as Taekwondo is a great martial art to help with co-ordination, focus, balance and discipline.

There are several elements to Taekwondo training

Patterns

Patterns are a set of movements, mainly defence and attack, set in a logical sequence against one or more imaginary opponents.

Sparring

All sparring is semi-contact, with full approved safety equipment worn to avoid risk of injury. The pace is fast, furious and visually exciting.

Gradings

Students are encouraged to grade for new belts every 3 to 6 months. The same syllabus is implemented throughout the TAGB.

Competition

The competition side of Taekwondo is not compulsory. It is however a great way to test your character and progress! You will have the opportunity to take part in local, national and international competitions.
